The South of France Wedding Edit: Bella’s European Venue Journal
From the glamour of the French Riviera to the lavender-scented landscapes of Provence, the South of France offers an extraordinary setting for a destination wedding. In this edition of Bella’s European Venue Journal, we explore the regions, venues and atmosphere that make this corner of France so captivating.

There are few places in Europe that capture the imagination quite like the South of France.
Perhaps it is the pale stone of a Provençal château in the afternoon sun. Perhaps it is a long lunch beneath olive trees, the scent of lavender drifting across the gardens, or the effortless glamour of arriving at a villa overlooking the Mediterranean.
For a destination wedding, the South of France offers something particularly special: variety without losing its sense of place.
You can have a sophisticated celebration on the French Riviera, an intimate château wedding in Provence, or a relaxed multi-day gathering surrounded by vineyards and countryside. And while the region has an unmistakable sense of luxury, it doesn't have to feel formal or overly polished.
That balance is exactly what makes it so appealing.

The French Riviera: glamour with a Mediterranean edge
When couples picture a glamorous South of France wedding, they are often imagining the Côte d’Azur.
The French Riviera stretches along the Mediterranean from around Saint-Tropez through Cannes, Antibes and Nice towards Menton, with some of Europe's most recognisable coastal landscapes along the way.
Here, the setting can be spectacularly cinematic: sea views, elegant villas, historic hotels, hidden gardens and terraces overlooking the Mediterranean.
It is a wonderful choice for couples who want their wedding to feel elegant, celebratory and distinctly European.
Think welcome drinks and champagne overlooking the sea, a sophisticated wedding dinner under the stars and a relaxed beach or pool gathering the following day.
The Riviera also works particularly well for a destination wedding where the guest experience is part of the celebration. Your guests aren't simply travelling to a venue for one day; they have an entire region to explore.
Nice, Antibes, Cannes and Saint-Tropez each have their own personality, and the right choice will depend on the atmosphere you want to create.

The Riviera is not one single wedding aesthetic. Depending on where you look, it can be glamorous and grand, relaxed and coastal, or intimate and deeply romantic. And that variety is part of its appeal.
Provence: romantic, atmospheric and wonderfully French
Further inland, Provence offers a very different interpretation of luxury.
Here, the drama comes less from the glamour of the coastline and more from the landscape itself: ancient stone, olive groves, vineyards, cypress trees and gardens filled with Mediterranean planting.
For couples dreaming of a French château or private estate, Provence can be particularly magical.
A Provençal wedding can feel wonderfully unhurried. Long lunches, candlelit dinners, local wine and an outdoor celebration beneath the trees all lend themselves naturally to the region.
And because Provence has such a strong visual identity, it can be beautiful without feeling excessively decorated.
For me, that is one of the great strengths of the South of France: the destination itself can become part of the design.
But the South of France is perhaps best understood not just by its regions, but by the different experiences a wedding here can create.

Three ways to experience the South of France
For the relaxed Mediterranean celebration: Beaumier Les Roches Rouges
If your idea of luxury is less grand ballroom and more barefoot Mediterranean elegance, Beaumier Les Roches Rouges is an entirely different proposition.

Set on the Mediterranean coast near Saint-Raphaël, this contemporary hotel has a wonderfully distinctive sense of place. The architecture, the sea, the red-rock coastline and the relaxed atmosphere all contribute to an experience that feels connected to the landscape rather than imposed upon it.
For couples who are drawn to a more relaxed, design-led destination wedding, this is the kind of setting that immediately suggests a different rhythm to the weekend. Think time by the water, a beautiful meal with friends and family, and a celebration that feels sophisticated without becoming overly formal.
It is also a lovely example of how a South of France wedding doesn't necessarily have to mean a traditional château or an elaborate ballroom. Sometimes, the luxury is in the setting, the atmosphere and the experience of being together.
Bella’s perspective: A wonderful direction for couples who want Mediterranean character, contemporary design and a wedding weekend that feels relaxed, stylish and genuinely enjoyable.

For the connected destination wedding: Anantara Plaza Nice Hotel
Nice is one of those destinations I would encourage couples not to overlook when planning a South of France wedding.
When people imagine the French Riviera, they often go straight to private villas, hilltop estates or glamorous coastal hotels. But a city-based wedding can offer a very different - and sometimes incredibly practical - destination experience.
Anantara Plaza Nice Hotel brings that city connection into the picture. Located in the heart of Nice, the hotel offers an elegant base for couples and guests who want to combine a wedding celebration with the restaurants, cafés, architecture and atmosphere of the city itself.
And from a planning perspective, Nice is worth considering for its international accessibility and transport connections. For couples bringing guests from the UK, the US or across Europe, the ease of arriving, staying and exploring can be an important part of the decision.
A city wedding doesn't have to feel any less luxurious. In fact, for some couples, the ability to step outside the venue and immediately be part of a vibrant European destination is exactly what makes the experience so appealing.
Bella’s perspective: A strong option to explore when guest accessibility, city atmosphere and a seamless destination experience matter just as much as the venue itself.

For the romantic Riviera wedding: Château de la Chèvre d’Or
And then there are venues that make you stop scrolling.
Château de la Chèvre d'Or is one of those places for me.
Perched in the medieval village of Èze, high above the Mediterranean, the setting is extraordinary. There is something about the combination of the historic village, the dramatic coastline, the gardens and the views that makes this part of the Riviera feel almost cinematic.
It is romantic in a way that doesn't need much explanation. The architecture and landscape do so much of the work, creating an atmosphere that feels intimate, timeless and unmistakably French Riviera.
For couples looking for a wedding with old-world romance, spectacular scenery and a sense of occasion, this is the kind of venue that deserves to be explored carefully.
And perhaps that's what I love most about it: it doesn't feel like luxury for the sake of luxury. It feels like a place with a genuine identity.
Bella’s perspective: One of those settings where the destination, architecture and atmosphere come together so beautifully that the venue itself becomes part of the wedding's emotional story.

Château, villa or hotel?
One of the first decisions I would make when considering a South of France wedding is not simply where in France, but what kind of experience you want your venue to create.
A private villa can give you an incredibly personal, residential feel - particularly attractive for smaller guest lists and multi-day celebrations.
A château or Provençal estate can provide architecture, gardens and that unmistakable sense of French heritage.
And a luxury hotel can be the perfect choice if guest logistics, accommodation and a seamless destination experience are priorities.
The three venues above illustrate just how different a South of France wedding can be:
Les Roches Rouges by Beaumier
Contemporary Mediterranean character, coastal atmosphere and a relaxed approach to luxury.
Anantara Plaza Nice Hotel
A city-based destination experience, with accessibility and the energy of Nice at its heart.
Château de la Chèvre d’Or
Romantic Riviera architecture, dramatic views and an unmistakable sense of place.
There is no universally "best" option.
The right venue depends on your guest list, budget, travel arrangements, preferred level of exclusivity and, perhaps most importantly, how you want your wedding weekend to feel.

A destination wedding rather than simply a wedding abroad
One of the reasons I love the South of France for destination weddings is that it lends itself so naturally to a multi-day celebration.
Rather than flying in for one wedding day and leaving again, couples can create an entire weekend around the destination.
Perhaps Friday begins with a relaxed poolside gathering or welcome dinner.
Saturday becomes the main wedding celebration, with the ceremony followed by dinner and dancing late into the evening.
Then Sunday might be a long Provençal lunch, a beach afternoon or simply time for everyone to relax together.
For couples travelling with friends and family from different countries, these additional moments can sometimes become just as memorable as the wedding itself.

When should you get married in the South of France?
The obvious temptation is to choose the height of summer.
But depending on your priorities, I would not automatically dismiss May, June, September or even early October.
The shoulder seasons can offer a slightly different experience, with their own advantages in terms of atmosphere, availability and guest comfort.
July and August bring the classic Mediterranean summer experience, but they can also mean greater demand and busier destinations.
September can be particularly appealing for couples who want warm Mediterranean weather combined with a slightly more relaxed feeling.
As with any destination wedding, the ideal month isn't simply about the weather forecast. It is about balancing climate, venue availability, guest travel, local events, pricing and the overall experience you want to create.

What makes a South of France wedding feel luxurious?
For me, it isn't necessarily about choosing the most expensive venue.
Luxury comes from thoughtful decisions.
A venue that works beautifully with your guest numbers.
A ceremony location that makes the most of the landscape rather than hiding it.
A menu that reflects the region.
A thoughtful welcome experience.
Beautiful transport between locations.
Time built into the weekend rather than rushing from one event to the next.
And suppliers who understand the level of service and attention to detail expected by an international couple.
The South of France already provides so much of the visual language of luxury. The challenge is knowing when to add to it - and when to let the setting speak for itself.

Finding the right South of France wedding venue
This is where destination venue sourcing becomes particularly valuable. The South of France offers an extraordinary range of venues, but the challenge is not simply finding somewhere beautiful. It is finding somewhere that works for your guest list, your priorities and the experience you want to create.
You might fall in love with a château only to discover that accommodation is limited.
A spectacular Riviera villa may look perfect online but have restrictions around music or late-night celebrations.
A hotel may appear ideal until you realise that your guests would prefer exclusive use.
And a venue that works beautifully for 40 guests may feel completely different with 100.
The first question shouldn't necessarily be:
“Which venue do we like?”
It should be:
“What do we want our wedding weekend to feel like - and where can we realistically create that experience?”
That is the starting point I use when sourcing European wedding venues for my couples.

The Bella Olah Weddings perspective
The South of France has all the ingredients couples dream about when they imagine a European destination wedding: beautiful architecture, Mediterranean landscapes, exceptional food and wine, sophisticated hospitality and an unmistakable sense of place.
But I think its greatest appeal is its flexibility.
It can be glamorous without being showy.
Romantic without being overly traditional.
Luxury without feeling stiff.
And celebratory without losing the relaxed character of the South of France itself.
For couples who want a wedding that feels beautiful, considered and genuinely enjoyable for the people attending, it is a destination I would always be excited to explore.
And sometimes, the hardest part isn't deciding whether the South of France is right for you.
It's deciding which part of it is.
