From Engagement to Intention: The Next Steps to Plan Your Wedding Calmly

A Valentine’s Gift for Engaged Couples

Diaries Of A Wedding Planner

February

Happy Valentine’s Day 🤍 This One’s for You. Whether you’ve just got engaged, you’re spending Valentine’s Day away together, or you’re simply in that in-between phase of “we’re engaged but haven’t properly started yet” - consider this my Valentine’s gift to you.

My first journal of the Diaries of a Wedding Planner series in January was about pausing, breathing, and understanding what comes first. February is about connection - with your partner, your people, and your vision. Before the real planning begins, this stage matters more than couples realise.

1. Prioritise Time Together (Before the Noise Begins)

Wedding planning is exciting - but it can also slowly take over every conversation if you let it. That’s why I always encourage couples to intentionally spend quality time together away from planning.

This might look like:

  • A spa weekend

  • A short city break

  • A few days doing something you both genuinely love

When my fiancé and I were in this stage, we took a short trip to Malaga - just the two of us. No plans, no opinions, no timelines. It gave us space to reconnect and recharge before stepping into decisions.

2. Build Your Inner Circle: Your Wedding Support Network

February is the perfect time to officially involve your people. Asking your bridesmaids, groomsmen, or key family members isn’t just about roles - it’s about support.

By doing this early, you:

  • Feel less alone in the process

  • Create excitement around the journey

  • Set expectations for involvement (and boundaries)

Choose people who:

  • Make you feel calm

  • Support your relationship

  • Understand that this season is about you

This support network becomes invaluable as planning progresses.

3. Dream Without Limits (For Now)

By now, you’ve probably saved inspiration across Instagram and Pinterest - and this is where it gets fun again.

Instead of locking into one idea, allow yourself to:

  • Create multiple mood directions

  • Explore different styles, locations, or guest experiences

  • Dream up a few “what if” scenarios

At this stage, nothing needs to be final.

✨ Behind the scenes truth: Some of the best weddings start with three very different ideas before one becomes clear.

4. Have a Discovery Call With a Wedding Planner

This is where February quietly sets you up for success. A discovery call with a wedding planner isn’t about committing to decisions - it’s about clarity.

A full-service wedding planner can:

  • Help you understand what comes next

  • Create a realistic planning timeline

  • Identify priorities before booking anything

  • Guide you away from common early mistakes

Most couples leave this call feeling calmer, clearer, and more confident about the road ahead.

5. Gently Prepare for What’s Coming Next

You don’t need to start venue tours yet - but you can begin thinking about:

  • Rough guest numbers

  • Preferred seasons or locations

  • Non-negotiables vs flexible elements

This groundwork makes the next step - venue searching - far smoother and far less overwhelming. (PS that is March's journal topic, so keep an eye out for the next chapter of the Diaries of a Wedding Planner series...)
