Where Your Wedding Story Belongs - A Wedding Planner’s Guide to Choosing the Perfect Venue

March Journal – Diaries of a Wedding Planner

For many couples I work with, the venue search begins the same way.

A few bookmarked castles. A handful of country houses. Perhaps a romantic Italian villa saved on Instagram during a late-night scroll after work.

But somewhere between the Pinterest boards and venue brochures, an important question often gets lost:

Where does your story truly belong?

As a planner working with busy professionals, I know time is precious. Decisions are often made quickly between meetings, flights and full diaries. Yet your wedding location deserves a little more reflection than simply choosing somewhere beautiful.

The most extraordinary weddings I plan always begin with something deeper than aesthetics.

They begin with place.

Start With Your Story

Before you think about venues, I often ask couples a few quiet questions.

Where did you feel most like yourselves together?

Was it a countryside weekend escape?

A city where you fell in love?

A place that already feels woven into your story?

Perhaps you became engaged along the Amalfi Coast.

Perhaps family gatherings always return to Yorkshire.

Perhaps Italy has always been the dream.

The venue then becomes a setting that continues your story, not just somewhere to host a party.

The Romance of a Grand English Estate

For many couples living in London or internationally, returning to the English countryside creates a sense of timeless celebration.

North Yorkshire in particular offers something rare: heritage, privacy and atmosphere.

A grand estate wedding allows guests to slow down. To stay for the weekend. To wander gardens and gather by candlelight in historic rooms.

Places such as Grantley Hall, Allerton Castle, or Swinton Estate each offer their own kind of narrative setting.

Some couples are drawn to the grandeur of a castle. Others prefer the intimacy of an estate where the entire weekend unfolds like a private house party.

The key is not simply choosing a venue that photographs beautifully - but one that feels like it could belong to you for a moment in time.

When Your Story Leads To Italy

For some couples, the answer lies further afield.

Italy has a way of pulling people back - especially if it already holds a chapter of their story.

Perhaps it was the location of your engagement.

Or the place you return to every summer.

Or simply somewhere that has always felt like a dream waiting to happen.

On the Amalfi Coast, venues such as Villa Cimbrone offer dramatic views that feel almost cinematic. Meanwhile Hotel Club Due Torri creates the feeling of a private Italian celebration overlooking the sea.

Yet destinations like Ravello also illustrate an important truth: extraordinary places often require thoughtful planning.

Logistics, guest travel, local suppliers and timing become essential elements of the experience.

With the right planning team in place, those complexities disappear into what guests experience as pure magic.

The Venue Should Shape The Celebration

A venue should never feel like a blank container.

The best ones shape the entire atmosphere of the wedding.

A Yorkshire estate lends itself to elegant multi-day celebrations with fireside drinks and countryside walks.

An Amalfi Coast terrace invites sunset ceremonies and candlelit dinners overlooking the sea.

The venue becomes more than a backdrop. It becomes part of the memory your guests carry home.

A Final Thought From My Planner's Notebook

If you are beginning your venue search this spring, pause before opening another spreadsheet of options.

Instead, ask yourselves something simpler:

Where in the world already feels meaningful to us?

Because when you start there, the venue often reveals itself naturally.

And the wedding that follows feels less like an event you planned…

…and more like a story that was always meant to unfold there.

Perhaps the most meaningful venues are not simply the most beautiful ones.

The right venue doesn’t simply host your wedding.

It becomes part of the story you will remember for the rest of your lives.

And sometimes, when you find the right place, it feels as though it was waiting for you all along.
